The area south of Holgate and Beach Haven Inlet is home to the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, named for the late conservationist Congressman from New Jersey, and administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The 6,000 acres designated as part of the refuge including Holgate and Little Beach provide essential nesting and feeding habitat for the rare piping plover, black skimmer and least tern sea birds. The 2.5 mile stretch of beach and marshland is one of the most active flight paths in the vast network of National Wildlife Refuges.
Closed in the summer season to protect the animals, birds and environment, it is open in the fall through spring so people may enjoy the natural environment and its beauty. Parking is available in the Holgate municipal lot near the Edwin B. Forsythe refuge.
Created by the power of surf and storms, the unspoiled sand beach, mud flats, dunes and salt marsh are ideal for those who enjoy the experience of hiking through nature that has not been tampered with by jetties, condos, sea walls or sand dredging. When your hike is over, it’s less than a mile to the center of a quaint shopping area with cozy, hometown restaurants. Holgate and the adjacent wildlife refuge offer a wonderful alternative to the busier shore and bay resorts, and quiet atmosphere provide a great place to get away for some real rest and relaxation.
